ARCHIVED - Extreme highs of 45 degrees in Andalusia, Spain for the second week running: Weather forecast July 18-24
Malaga burns in forest fire while a weather warning has been issued for Seville and Granada as the heat refuses to let up
Andalusia weather warnings, Wednesday July 20
Technically the heatwave in Spain is over, but try telling that to the people in Seville, Cordoba, Jaén and other areas of inland Andalusia, where maximum temperatures will once again exceed 40ºC nearly every day this week.
Parts of northern Andalusia, including Granada and Cordoba, will remain on yellow and orange weather warning for high temperatures from Monday to at least Wednesday, and possibly beyond, but Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) only issue weather alerts three days in advance.
The area around Mijas in Malaga has been suffering the effects of the extreme heat as it experiences its second serious forest fire so far this year, but that’s not even where the highest temperatures are.
Just like last week, the hottest parts of mainland Spain’s southernmost autonomous community will be Seville and Cordoba, where mid-afternoon temperatures will creep up to 45ºC by next Sunday, July 24.
The coolest part of the region will be in the Huelva municipality of Aroche in the extreme northwest, on the border with Portugal, where night-time temperatures will be in the low teens at the beginning of this week, but then rise to be in the low-20s by the weekend. But even in this traditionally chillier area, the maximum temperature will be as high as 41ºC on Sunday.
The coast of Andalusia will see higher minimums – around the mid-20s – and also lower maximums that are closer to the mid-30s than to 40. Once again, the windiest area will be on the southwestern coastline near Barbate and Tarifa, Cadiz, but even there windspeeds will not be more than 30km/h at their strongest on Thursday July 21.
For the sake of easing the atmospheric pressure and helping firefighters in their battle against the region’s blazes, everyone is hoping for a thunderstorm next week, but it looks unlikely to materialise any time soon.
