The Fiestas normally take place in Cartagena at the end of September
The annual Romans and Carthaginians fiestas are amongst the most important celebrations in the annual festive year in Cartagena, but this year almost all the major acts of the week have been cancelled due to the Covid situation in Murcia and the risk of large crowds gathering to watch the theatrical representations, battle and parades which are such a central part of these fiestas.
This year the large encampment and mediaeval market which is normally located next to the football stadium will not be mounted as normal, but one element which the public can enjoy is the fairground, which will be constructed on the same large patch of waste ground as is usually occupied between September 17 and 26, the dates scheduled for the fiestas.
This year the capacity of the fairground will be limited in order for basic Covid precautions to be exercised, but at least there will de some traces of the fiestas in the city.
The federation representing the various bodies of troops and tribes has recorded the theatrical representations and will broadcast them via social media on the same nights they would usually take place in the city. In this way, even though the sounds of battle won’t be filling the city this September, enthusiasts can still remember the pleasure of attending the shows in former years and look forward to battle resuming as normal next autumn.
