ARCHIVED - Fasten your seatbelts as another Spanish airline votes to strike
Air Europe has announced work stoppages across Spain in May and June
Travellers to and from Spain have been subjected to untold disruption since the middle of last year as cabin crew, ground handling staff and air traffic controllers from countless airlines downed tools in protest over low salaries and poor working conditions.
So far, Air Europa has managed to side-step much of the drama but this is all about to change, after union bosses announced on Tuesday April 19 that negotiations in the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA) have finally broken down.
Some 640 pilots in bases across Spain have voted to go on strike and while firm dates have yet to be given, the industrial action is likely to take place during the busy months of May and June.
"This measure responds to the company's zero interest in reaching an agreement that resolves the labour dispute, after the mediation promoted by SIMA at the company's request," the Spanish Union of Air Line Pilots (Sepla) said in a statement.
The union added that it’s “disheartening” that “airline managers have once again ignored the legitimate labour demands raised by pilots,” who are requesting pay increases in line with rising inflation.
The work stoppages come at a time of great uncertainty for all Air Europa staff since negotiations with IAG to take over 100% of the company are again well underway. The final decision on the merger will rest with Brussels and although Iberia has promised to keep on all Air Europa workers, it’s still a worrying time for employees.
Assuming the takeover goes through, the IAG group will soon control 38.5% of the air traffic in Spain. The European Commission is currently studying the proposal and will need to decide if the merger will affect fair competition.
