Fierce winds fell trees and cause damage in Murcia
The worst affected place has been Cartagena
The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 in the Region of Murcia received nearly 100 emergency calls in just 10 hours yesterday, all related to issues with the strong winds and high waves caused by Storm Aline.
Between 12pm and 10pm on Thursday October 19, a day when virtually the entire Region and much of the rest of Spain was on alert for extreme weather conditions, the 112 emergency number took a total of 90 phone calls to resolve 75 problems that had arisen as a result of the adverse weather.
The most affected municipality, with a total of 66 calls to resolve 43 issues, was Cartagena. The most frequent incidents were falling branches from trees and things falling off the sides of buildings, as well as blockages on the roads. The extent of the material damage is still pending assessment, but no people appear to have been reported injured.
In Mazarrón’s Avenida de las Moreras, a falling palm tree managed to nearrowly avoid crushing any cars, and municipal workers had to come and cut the heavy tree into pieces with chainsaws to be able to move it out the way.
