ARCHIVED - First patient euthanized in Madrid
The 58-year-old died this week after waiting four months for the procedure in Spain
This week, Javier Serrano, a 58-year-old man who had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), became the first patient to get euthanized in the Community of Madrid. He died in his bed at home, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday November 4 after waiting four long months for the procedure.
After receiving the call that confirmed his request for euthanasia had been approved on Tuesday, Mr Serrano chose to die the very next day.
“I didn’t want to wait any longer, I can’t take it anymore. The pains are brutal, every day that passes they get worse and I can’t even stand them with morphine”, the patient explained shortly before his death, insisting that he was “happy” and “content” to let go after 58 years.
The controversial law regulating euthanasia was passed in Spain on March 24 and requires each autonomous community to thoroughly vet patients to determine their suitability for the procedure. Madrid has actually been slow in applying the law as the community insisted first on creating a registry of medical practitioners who conscientiously object to euthanasia.
According to the hospital where Mr Serrano was being treated, the procedure was carried out as planned and without incident.
