First summer heatwave arrives: Spain weather forecast June 22-25
The mercury will exceed 40ºC in southern Spain this weekend with several uncomfortably hot nights in store
Summer officially begins this week and after several weeks of storms, Spain could be looking at the first heatwave of the year this summer thanks to the arrival of an African air mass that will lead to progressively rising temperatures over the next few days.
Lots of conditions have to be satisfied for a true ‘heatwave’ to be declared by meteorologists, but Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo has confirmed that, at the very least, much of the country will enjoy an “episode of high temperatures” this coming weekend.
“We are talking about an important warm episode and, although it is still early and this will have to be confirmed, we cannot rule out that from the weekend the thresholds of intensity, extension and duration necessary to be able to talk about the first heatwave of the summer of 2023 will be exceeded,” he added.
On the other hand, the nights are going to be quite uncomfortable in a good part of the Mediterranean coast and the south, with the thermometers scarcely dipping below 20 or 22ºC. Moreover, as the days go on, del Campo even expects a few torrid nights, where the temperatures exceed a sweltering 25ºC.
The tail-end of the storm which battered the Region of Murcia this week will linger on Thursday morning, June 22, dousing much of Cantabria, the Pyrenees, northern Aragón and Catalonia in heavy showers and locally strong squalls. The rest of Spain should clear as the hours go by, slightly cloudy skies giving way to a bright and sunny day.
Haze and dust clouds will be present in much of the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands but there is no rain on the horizon.
Temperatures are on the rise with the exception of the northwest and the Balearics.

Alicante: 22ºC; 32ºC
Málaga: 20ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 36ºC
The real summery weather will arrive on Friday June 23 with clear skies forecast in most of the country, aside from some intervals of low morning clouds in the extreme north, with morning mists and fog banks in Galicia, inland Cantabria and the Pyrenees.
The cloud cover could build towards the afternoon in eastern Spain and inland Mallorca, where the occasional shower can’t be ruled out, and the haze will continue to affect the far south and southeast.
Maximum temperatures in general increase except for the Mediterranean area and around the Strait, where they will drop slightly. In general though it’s widely expected to exceed 35ºC in the southwest, while the mercury could top out at 40ºC in the Guadalquivir valley. Nighttime temperatures will exceed 20ºC in much of the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands.

Málaga: 21ºC; 28ºC
Murcia: 21ºC; 32ºC
Very little change is expected on Saturday June 24, although the haze could develop into calimas, or suspended dust clouds, in the extreme southwest.
The thermometers will continue to climb, more pronounced in the north and northwest, while most of the southwest will again exceed 35ºC at the height of the day. Night-time temperatures won’t dip below 20ºC in the Mediterranean coast or the Balearic Islands.

Alicante: 22ºC; 30ºC
Málaga: 22ºC; 29ºC
Murcia: 20ºC; 35ºC
Spain is in store for another mostly dry and clear day on Sunday June 25. Daytime temperatures will shoot up again in most of the country with the exception of the northwest, where some significant drops could actually be experienced. The mercury will hover around the mid-30s for the most night while the Mediterranean and the southwest are in for yet another tropical night.
