Flu cases surge in Spain... but what does it mean for you?
A rise in flu cases among children and teenagers could put older adults at risk, while hospital admissions show a slight decline
Spain is experiencing a sharp rise in flu cases, particularly among children and teenagers aged 5 to 19. According to the latest report from the Carlos III Health Institute, flu rates have increased to 140.3 cases per 100,000 people, up from 126.8 last week. Among younger age groups, the figures are even more concerning, with cases jumping from 202 to 281 per 100,000 in just seven days.
But why does this matter if you’re over 50? As epidemiologist Quique Bassat explains, “Children are the main transmitters of flu,” meaning this surge in cases among younger people could soon spread to older generations – those most vulnerable to severe illness.
On a more positive note, hospital admissions for flu have fallen slightly for the second consecutive week, now standing at 5.4 cases per 100,000 people. However, this is still higher than the same period last year when the rate was 3.9. Since the start of the flu season, 28% of hospitalised cases have developed pneumonia, 6.1% have required intensive care, and 4.6% have sadly not survived.
If you or your loved ones are feeling unwell, it is important to remain cautious. Testing in health centres has found that nearly half (48.7%) of those with respiratory symptoms actually have flu. Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases remain low, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – which primarily affects young children – has also seen a slight increase.
While it is impossible to avoid all exposure, taking simple precautions such as frequent handwashing, maintaining a healthy immune system, and limiting close contact with unwell family members (especially young grandchildren) could help reduce your risk. If you have not yet had a flu jab, it is not too late – it could still help prevent severe illness as flu season continues.
With experts surprised by this seasonal spike, now is a good time to stay alert, take precautions and look after yourself and those around you.
