ARCHIVED - Flurona hits Spain: patients diagnosed with Covid and flu at the same time
Health experts in Spain have reassured that the cases are not serious
The first week of January has been marked by an exponential rise in Covid cases, with the 14-day cumulative incidence rate standing at 1,175 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at the year’s end. On top of the health implications of the virus, the usual winter ailments have hit Spain, and Catalonia has reported the country’s first cases of ‘flurona’ – a simultaneous infection of both the flu and coronavirus.
Israel was the first country to identify flurona before Christmas. A young and unvaccinated pregnant woman tested positive for both viruses, but her symptoms were mild and she was discharged from the Beilinson Hospital in the city of Petach a few days later.
After the Ministry of Health confirmed on Monday January 3 that a few cases of the dual disease were diagnosed in Catalonia, the director of the Servei Català de la Salut reassured that contracting both the flu and Covid at the same time is very rare and that the symptoms presented are not very serious.
Instead, the official insisted that “they are sporadic cases [and] it is not the norm”.
As a result of increased safety measures such as social distancing, mask-wearing and hand sanitising, the flu virus was almost non-existent in Spain in 2020, but with more relaxed measures nationally the disease has returned with a vengeance during the winter season on 2021/2022.
Flurona, however, is difficult to diagnose given that both diseases are incredibly similar.
“They are viral and cause shortness of breath, as they both attack the upper respiratory tract,” one medical expert explained.
