Foggy calima conditions in parts of Murcia this Tuesday
Air quality is poor in Murcia today, and any rain will be accompanied by mud
While the weather this week in the Region of Murcia will be mostly dry and sunny, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of some ‘suspended dust’ or ‘calima’ from the Sahara Desert drifting over that will leave cloudy skies and high levels of ‘particle intrusion’ this Tuesday March 19.
It is a regional holiday in the Region this Tuesday for San José, and some business and shops will be shut for the day.
Air quality will worsen as the dust cloud drifts over Murcia. It has already passed over the Canary Islands and began to enter mainland Spain from the southwest on Monday night. The worst air quality will be in Andalucía and Castilla-La Mancha, but the Region of Murcia will not be spared this episode, especially from midday on Tuesday.
This will also serve to bring the already high temperatures up even further, to exceed 30ºC, except in Cartagena, which will remain at a maximum of 23ºC. The skies will remain cloudy due to the haze, and the Aemet has also indicated that some rain may fall in the northwest mountains of the Region of Murcia – rain that will be accompanied by muddy deposits.
In view of the forecast worsening of air quality, anyone who is deemed ‘at risk’, especially the elderly and those with respiratory problems, should avoid undertaking any strenuous physical activity, especially outdoors. If those vulnerable people do have to go outside, the use of an FPP2 facemask is recommended as a protective measure.
