Foreign tourists confirmed among dead in Mallorca building collapse
It is believed that the tragedy was a result of the busy rooftop terrace of the restaurant being too heavy

The nationalities and ages of the four people killed in Mallorca this Thursday after the beachfront restaurant Medusa Beach Club collapsed have been revealed to be two German tourists, a Senegalese man and a Spanish woman.
A police spokesperson said, “The victims are two German women aged 20 and 30, a 23-year-old Spanish employee [of the restaurant] and a 44-year-old Senegalese man.”
The Senegalese man has been named as Abdoulaye Diop, who in December 2017, together with his friend Oumar M'bengue, hit the headlines for having rescued a bather who had gone into the water on Palma beach and was having trouble getting back to shore. At that time, they both worked as nightclub bouncers.
The two-storey restaurant building collapsed on the beach in Palma de Mallorca last night, leaving at least 16 other people injured. The busy top-floor terrace, full of diners, came crashing down through the first floor and into the basement, likely due to excess weight, although the exact causes of the disaster will be the subject of a police investigation.
Sources from the Policía Nacional say that, in addition to the four people who died, nine people were “seriously injured” and seven people were “very seriously” injured, all of them having been transferred to various hospitals in Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital.
When emergency crews were conducting their search and rescue operations last night, they had to ask the gathered crowd for silence in order to be able to hear if there was anyone else trapped under the rubble.
It is believed that the building was undergoing renovation work when it collapsed.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has said he has spoken to local and regional authorities and has promised that the government is ready to help “with all the means and troops that are necessary”.
He continued, “I want to send my condolences to the families of the deceased and my wish for a speedy recovery to the injured.”
Three days’ official mourning have been declared and a minutes’ silence held this Friday May 24 at midday in memory of the victims
