Almería has the highest proportion of foreigners in Spain, on a par with Alicante, and is home to 162,357 overseas residents. This is more than 21% of the province's population and 1.5 points higher than five years ago. Of these migrants, 120,000 are of working age.

In fact, the province has more registered migrant workers in employment than ever, and over the last five years the figure has increased by 10,000 to 70,000, resulting in a notable shift in the weight foreigners hold in the workplace and Almería's economy.

Data from December 2022, compiled by the Ministry of Social Security, shows that around one in four active workers in the province are non-Spanish. Of the 323,019 people who ended 2022 in employment, 77,014 were foreigners.

And the influence of migrant workers in the Almería economy has increased by five points in recent years, according to the Ministry.

By comparison, in December 2009, 49,741 non-Spanish residents had jobs in Almería, and their weight in the working population was 19.17%. At that time, 260,783 people were in employment.

In terms of gender, the number of employed foreign men is twice as high as that of women (51,289 to 25,730), with the majority of both employed in the agricultural sector, followed by transport and vehicle repairs, the hotel and catering industry, manufacturing and administrative services.

In global terms, Almería closed 2022 with 53,435 unemployed, 3,032 less (-5.37%) than the previous year. According to data released on Tuesday January 24 by the Ministry of Labour and Economy, the number of people registered with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), fell by 2.45% in December (-1,341) compared to November.
