ARCHIVED - Forest fire in Mazarron destroys 2.3 hectares of land
Firefighters from Murcia, Cartagena and Mazarrón were all sent to deal with the blaze
A forest fire in the municipality of Mazarrón burnt through 2.3 hectares in just a few hours on Sunday afternoon, September 26.
The emergency services began receiving calls about a wildfire in the Algarrobo area of Mazarrón from 1.31pm on Sunday and firefighters from Mazarrón, Cartagena and Murcia were all sent to the scene, as well as two helicopters, officers from the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil and Civil Protection officers from Mazarrón.
By 3.51pm the fire was declared under control and at 7.27pm, the 112 emergency services in Murcia announced that the blaze had been extinguished, after affecting approximately 2.3 hectares of land.
The Region of Murcia has escaped relatively unscathed from wildfires this summer, but other areas in Spain have not been so lucky, such as the province of Málaga, which lost around 10,000 hectares of land to an enormous wildfire at the beginning of September, or the region of Galicia, where an intentional blaze affected 1,500 hectares.
Meanwhile, on an international level, global emissions of carbon dioxide from wildfires broke record levels this August.
