ARCHIVED - Forest fires scorch twice as much forest land in Murcia as in 2020
So far this year 61.5 hectares have been affected in Murcia
According to data from the Ministry of Transparency, Participation and Public Administration, approximately twice the amount of land has been burned through forest fires in Murcia so far in 2021 as in the equivalent period last year, some 61.56 hectares compared with just 29.72 hectares in 2020.
In the first seven months of this year there have been a total of 51 forest fires in the Region, but in June and July only two of the six fires which occurred affected more than one hectare of land, according to the data produced by the Emergency Civil Protection Plan for Forest Fires in the Region of Murcia (Plan Infomur).
Of the wildfires which have occurred this year, the largest took place in January, in the area of La Ganuela in Alhama de Murcia, which scorched 24.6 hectares. This was followed by another blaze in the Llano de la Traviesa de Moratalla, in June, which affected 12.5 hectares, and this month, 11.5 hectares more were razed in Barranco del Feo, in Cartagena.
In 2021, the Infomur Plan has increased the number of mobile Civil Protection patrols in operation to 34, two more than last summer, and has almost 500 people working on the operation every day.
During a presentation on Tuesday, Antonio Sánchez Lorente of the regional government praised the efforts of the personnel who often put their own lives in danger in order to protect others, and appealed to the public of the Region of Murcia to be responsible for their countryside, particularly during this period of high temperatures.
