Four easy autumn walks to enjoy in the Region of Murcia
From riverside paths to mountain history, these gentle routes are ideal for a relaxed day outdoors
Autumn is a lovely time to explore the Region of Murcia. The days are milder, the light is softer and the countryside takes on warmer shades of gold and red.
Whether you fancy a gentle riverside stroll, a family walk through pine woodland or a route with sweeping mountain views, there are plenty of easy options close to home. Here are four accessible walks worth considering.
A gentle riverside stroll
For something flatter and more peaceful, the Jarral Route in Abarán follows the Segura river.
The walk is about two kilometres long and passes through lush riverside vegetation that provides plenty of shade and coolness. It’s an easy route for a relaxed stroll while listening to the river, irrigation ditches and traditional channels.
The route also offers a chance to discover Abarán’s long connection with water culture and the natural beauty of the Vega Alta region.
Water and shade in Caravaca
Fuentes del Marqués, near Caravaca de la Cruz, is one of northwest Murcia’s most attractive natural spots. Crystal-clear springs rise directly from the ground, creating a cool microclimate where fish, birds, squirrels and centuries-old holm oaks thrive.
It’s a lovely place for a flat, leafy walk beside the water, or as a starting point for longer hikes towards the ravines of the Sierra del Gavilán.
The emblematic Templar Tower stands at the heart of the area and houses the Northwest Nature Interpretation Centre.
The outing can also be combined with a visit to the Vera Cruz Museum, which covers the history of the Caravaca relic, its liturgical vestments and the remains of the old fortress. The Miniature Ethnographic Museum, created by artist Ángel Reinón, is another option, showing traditional trades and rural life from years gone by.

A family route in Sierra Espuña
For a comfortable mountain walk with a playful touch, the Dinosaur Trail in Sierra Espuña is a good choice.
The route begins by crossing a striking wooden suspension bridge over the Leiva ravine. From there, a flat and gently sloping path winds through Mediterranean woodland dominated by Aleppo pine.
Walkers can also see remains of traditional water architecture, including an old underground reservoir once used to collect rainwater.
The surrounding undergrowth includes rosemary, thyme, rockrose, holm oak and mastic, making it a pleasant route for families, couples or anyone keen to take a few photographs.
Mountain views and history
Higher up in Sierra Espuña, the Snow Wells offer a different kind of walk, combining fresh air with a glimpse into the past.
The area contains 28 snow wells built between the 16th and 20th centuries. These cylindrical stone structures, some topped with domes, were once used to store winter snow and distribute it as ice to towns and hospitals across the Region.
Two well-marked routes allow visitors to explore the wells: the Pedro López Route and the path linking the Leyva Valley with Collado Mangueta.
It’s a rewarding option for anyone who enjoys open views, fresh mountain air and a little history along the way.
