ARCHIVED - Fourth Covid jab expected mid-September with the arrival in Spain of 10 million vaccines
Spain will begin administering the second booster to over-80s and nursing home residents later this month
Spain is gearing up for a new autumn vaccination campaign with 10 million doses of the Covid jab designed to tackle the Omicron variants expected to arrive in the coming days. With these new vaccines, the government will offer fourth inoculations first to those over the age of 80 and people living in nursing homes, before the second booster dose trickles down to the over-60s.
The exact date for the rollout hasn’t been confirmed yet – the Public Health Commission and the Ministry of Health are meeting throughout this week – but it’s likely to be mid-September, a time frame that was earmarked by government during the summer.
Several communities including the Region of Murcia have requested that the fourth Covid jab be given alongside the flu vaccine to make the process more convenient for people and to encourage the uptake of both inoculations, but again, a decision has yet to be made on this.
Last week, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the booster vaccines developed by both Pfizer and Moderna and as of September 1, EU countries can begin administering the jab as soon as they receive their stock.
Spain’s supply will also come from the two pharma giants, but the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, is still “very hopeful” that the home-grown Hipra serum will be added to the list.
While the Minister has suggested that Spain is in a “reasonably optimal situation to face autumn and winter” the European Commission has asked people to be extremely cautious, warning that we should be prepared to face another “challenging” season.
According to the latest report from the Ministry, 92.8% of the population over 12 years of age in Spain is now double jabbed, which represents 40.6 million people. Of these, 25.9 million (54.6% of the entire population) have received a third dose.
