Fourth summer heatwave hits Spain: Weather forecast Aug 8-11
Half of Spain is on alert for temperatures above 40ºC this weekend
Weather alerts for high temperatures on Saturday August 10
Brace yourself Spain, it’s going to be another scorcher of a weekend. A new heatwave, the fourth of the season so far, is set to hit, with temperatures exceeding 40ºC in a large part of the country between Friday August 9 and Sunday August 11.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the heatwave should peak on Saturday August 10 but all through the weekend the thermometers will fail to dip much below 22 or 23ºC, so we’re in for a few stifling nights as well.
On Thursday August 8, an anticyclone will result in mostly bright and sunny weather across Spain with the exception of western Cantabria, where some light showers could linger.
Daytime temperatures will start to climb in northern Spain but they could actually dip slightly in southern areas like Andalucía. Even so, the thermometers will soar past 35ºC in most of the southern and northeastern half of the country, and it’s likely to hit 40ºC in valleys on the southern and northeastern Atlantic slopes, as well as in parts of Castilla-La Mancha. Likewise, the nights will be tropical, warmer than usual.
Orange warning for high temperatures: Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid.
Yellow warning for high temperatures: Andalucía, Aragon, Catalonia, Galicia, Navarra, La Rioja.
Low morning cloud and some fog will start Friday August 9 off along the coast, and this could move inland as the hours go by. The heat will begin to spread as the heatwave takes hold, pushing the mercury past 35ºC in most of the inland areas of Spain and the Balearic Islands, and even 40ºC, occasionally, in valleys in the southern area of the Atlantic slope and in the northeast.
Orange warning for high temperatures: Aragon, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid.
Yellow warning for high temperatures: Andalucía, Galicia, Navarra, La Rioja.
As we head into the weekend, Aemet expects Spain to break even more heat records than it did in July. Night-time temperatures will shoot up into the mid-20s in most of Spain on Saturday August 10 and again, somewhere around 35ºC will be average at the height of the day in most parts.
Orange warning for high temperatures: Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid.
Yellow warning for high temperatures: Andalucía, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia, Navarra, Basque Country, La Rioja.
Sunday August 11 could dawn a little overcast and foggy along the southern coasts but this will soon clear to reveal a true scorcher of a day.
Although day-time temperatures will still rise sharply in the far north of the country, the mercury will drop considerably in the west, beginning to dampen the heat wave.
Temperatures will still exceed 35ºC in much of southern and north-eastern Spain, and even 40ºC degrees in the Guadalquivir and Ebro valleys.
As things begin to cool down ahead of a new week, all of the weather warnings have been lifted.
