ARCHIVED - Free snacks make a comeback on British Airways flights
Passengers on short flights will now be offered complimentary food and drinks
British Airways boss Sean Doyle has announced this week that complimentary drinks and snacks will return to economy flights after the airline axed the free refreshments on all short-haul flights back in 2016 in an attempt to rake in savings of 400 million pounds (479 million euros).
Mr Doyle acknowledged that the carrier’s image took a hit once customers had to start paying for their sandwiches and hot beverages, following in the footsteps of budget airline Ryanair, which was recently given a fine of 24,000 euros by Spain for charging passengers for hand luggae.
In an open letter to BA customers, Mr Doyle recognised that the move had been a mistake: “You’ve also told us you appreciate the complimentary water and snacks we’ve been offering on short-haul flights in our Euro Traveller cabin, so we’ll be continuing with these too,” Mr Doyle’s letter read.
“I’m not seeking to make excuses for things that should have gone better. What I am doing is making a personal commitment to you that we will build a better British Airways,” he added.
In addition to offering complimentary water, snacks and a selection of hot and cold beverages to passengers, the airline boss also confirmed that the company plans to launch a new luggage tracking app as well as vowing to make a series of improvements to the company’s call centre to avoid long wait times.
IAG, which owns British Airways, along with a host of other airlines, saw their market value plummet during the coronavirus pandemic due to international travel restrictions, and the share price dropped by a dramatic 60%.
However, Mr Doyle remains optimistic for the future: “For me, 2022 is the year we’re finally able to rebuild and re-energise our airline.”
