French shooter of Spanish politician arrested in the Netherlands
Dutch police have arrested a Frenchman suspected of pulling the trigger against the Spanish politician shot in Madrid in 2023
Dutch Police have arrested a man in the Netherlands on suspicion of being the alleged perpetrator of the shooting of former Spanish politician and vocal critic of the Iranian regime Alejo Vidal-Quadras.
The latest person to be arrested in connection with the plot to assassinate Vidal-Quadras last November is Mehrez Ayari, a 37-year-old French man of Tunisian origin, with multiple prior convictions in France.
As reported by the Spanish National Police Force, Ayari had an International Arrest Warrant issued against him by the Audiencia Nacional court in Spain, whose court number 5 is investigating the case.
It is thought that he is the person who actually pulled the trigger in the attack.
Alejo Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face on November 9, 2023 near his home in Madrid but survived the attack.
Upon waking up from a coma, he alleged that the regime in Iran must be behind the assassination attempt due to his vocal criticism of them in the past.
Vidal-Quadras is one of the founding members of the far-right Vox party in Spain and former president of the centre-right Popular Party of Catalonia.
This week’s arrest is the sixth made as part of the investigation into the attack on him last year.
Among those arrested is Greg Oliver Higuera Marcano, a Venezuelan national located on the Colombian border allegedly involved in the purchase of the motorbike used in the getaway and whose extradition to Spain has been requested by the judge.
In April of this year, police arrested another suspect in Holland for her alleged involvement in the financing and preparation of the attack against the politician.
The first three arrests took place on November 21, 2023 in Spain: a couple in Lanjarón (Granada) and a young man in Fuengirola (Málaga). The man arrested in the Granada town was remanded in custody, while the woman – of British origin – and the young man – also linked to the motorbike – were released.
