ARCHIVED - Fuel will be the most expensive in history this Easter in Spain
Petrol and diesel will reach historic highs in Spain this Holy Week despite the discount
The price of fuel across Spain will reach its highest price point in history over Easter, despite the bonus of 20 cent per litre that came into force on April 1.
The government incentive has been in place for a week now and although petrol and diesel prices have actually fallen even without the discount, they will still remain at levels never before seen during Holy Week, which is the first major holiday of the year when some 14.6 million cars are expected to hit the roads.
The average price of a litre of unleaded has dropped by 11.27% compared to last week to stand at 1.613 euros, its lowest level since the end of February, according to the European Union Oil Bulletin. For its part, diesel has fallen by 10.34% and gone back to prices last seen at the beginning of March, 1.647 euros per litre.

The government aid represents a reduction of almost 11 euros when filling the average tank, but this slight respite will not prevent it from being the most expensive Easter in history for drivers, which will also be the first Holy Week since pre-pandemic 2019 without mobility restrictions.
During Holy Week, the average price of petrol and diesel is expected to be 22.2% and 38.4%, respectively, more expensive than Easter last year, and 22.2% and 33.9% more expensive than in 2019.
Filling a 55-litre tank with petrol now costs around 88.71 euros, about 16.11 euros more than the same time last year; in the case of diesel, refuelling will set you back 90.58 euros, an increase of around 25.13 euros.
