German tourists break Spanish drinking record by downing 1,234 beers in 3 hours
The 55 participants managed to break the previous record set in Mallorca in July

“It was a really great group and a lot of fun,” said Kai Uwe Kahmann, the travel agent who organised the event.
The goal of the participants was to beat the previous record of 1,111 beers, set in July in the Mallorcan bar of Bierkönig. Their feat began at 10.32am and the last beer was downed at 12.54pm. The tricky part, though, was that all of the booze had to be poured before the challenge started.
“It took us about an hour and a half longer than expected,” Kahmann explained. “The last few beers in particular were too hot and stale. But what wouldn't you do for a new record?”
Although everyone was naturally drinking at a different pace, the new record represents an average of 22.4 beers per participant – or 10 an hour each.
“Everything was done in an orderly manner, no-one lost their temper or got out of line,” said the 62-year-old businessman, one of the oldest members of the drinking troupe. Although he did admit that the event took its toll eventually.
“I didn’t have a thick head” the next day he said, but he admitted to having to crawl into bed at 7pm while some of the younger tourists stayed out partying.
The gang spent 2838.20 euros on the 1,234 beers, which amounts to 2.30 euros a glass.
Will this event lead to a new record attempt? Kahmann isn’t so sure, but a few brave souls have already set their sights on downing 2,222 on the next go-round.
