ARCHIVED - German transport strike grounds dozens of flights to Spain
A total of 81 flights between Germany and Spain have been cancelled on the first day of the industrial action
On the first day of a nationwide transport strike in Germany that has left airports and train stations deserted, 81 of the 191 flights scheduled for Spain have been cancelled. For the first time ever, two of the country’s largest unions have joined forces, resulting in flights and public transport grinding to a halt.
The German unions are demanding 10.5% salary increases for their workers to compensate for rising inflation and the industrial action, which began on Monday March 27, is expected to affect flights all across Europe.
According to Aena, so far 41 arrivals and 40 departures between Spain and Germany have been cancelled and all Deutsche Bahn commuter, medium distance and high speed traffic has come to a standstill.
"The situation in the transport sector is dramatic. It has 20 years of downsizing behind it, it has 20 years of deregulation and liberalisation behind it," union vice president Christine Behle explained.
The strike will initially last 24 hours and impact every type of public transport in the country. Unions have asked for a salary increase of at least 500 euros per month for the two and a half million public sector workers. Negotiations have reached a stalemate after employers proposed a 5% gradual pay rise and a one-off bonus of 2,500 euros.
