ARCHIVED - Gibraltar to ban conversion therapy
The Equality Rights Group has welcomed the government’s decision to legislate against the practice
The Minister for Justice and Equality has confirmed that the government is currently working on legislation to ban the practice of conversion therapy in Gibraltar, a method that has been described as “unethical and potentially harmful” by the NHS in England.
While independent of the UK Government’s own stance on the matter, the HM Government of Gibraltar plans to bring forward a Bill with a view to introducing the relevant law before the summer.
The Minister for Justice and Equality, the Hon Samantha Sacramento, said: "I am proud that this Government is already working to introduce legislation to prohibit the practice of conversion therapy, which has no place in Gibraltar. The Equality Rights Group, and the public, can be reassured that work is underway to draft a Bill, with the aim to publish before the summer."
Conversion therapy is the practice of methods like counselling and aversive stimulation to suppress a person’s sexual orientation, and is also used to alter the gender identity of trans people.
The Equality Rights Group (ERG) said it first raised this issue with Gibraltar almost a year ago and has welcomed the government’s decision to legislate a ban on the practice.
“It is unacceptable in 2022 that any kind of sexual and gender health referrals be passed on to unqualified or partial individuals,” ERG chair Felix Alvarez said.
“It cannot be tolerated in any mental health field, and this is no exception.”
“This has been the case with issues of sexual orientation and identity in the past and which have come to our attention following concerns which have arisen.”
