Good news for Costa Blanca holidaymakers as tourist tax will be scrapped
The Valencian government plans to formally repeal the controversial tourist tax this week
The president of the Valencian Community Carlos Mazón has confirmed that he intends to officially repeal the controversial tourist tax at a meeting of the plenary session on Friday November 10.
Mazón made his announcement at the World Travel Market (WTM) fair in London, where easyJet gave the exciting news that it is opening its fourth Spanish base on the Costa Blanca, with 9 new destinations scheduled to operate from Alicante-Elche airport next summer.
The tourist tax is a surcharge placed on the price of hotels and other holiday rentals which is already in place in many other European countries. In the Valencian Community, the supplement would have amounted to around one euro per person per night, an additional cost that was greeted with dismay by British travellers who are already paying through the nose for more expensive flights than ever.
However, the regional president assured in London that the 2.5 million UK tourists who are set to visit the Community in 2024 “do not have to pay to come, they are welcome,” a message that is already being celebrated by travel agents and holidaymakers across Britain.
According to Mazón, the tax approved by the Spanish government last December with the aim of promoting sustainable tourism “has only been an absurd threat.” He has refused to implement it, he said, as it could have stopped thousands of tourists from choosing the Costa Blanca as their holiday destination.
The Decree Law for the repeal of the tourist tax will be processed urgently and after its approval at the plenary session and it will come into force as soon as it’s published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana.
