ARCHIVED - Granada launches clean-up plan to combat allergies by reducing pollen
This is the first time the city in Andalusia has drawn up a specific plan to crack down on pollen.
It's spring, trees are blossoming on every street corner....and thousands of allergy sufferers are sneezing and wheezing in misery as the pollen count goes through the roof, hence a new initiative in Granada, where the council has launched a specific cleaning scheme to reduce pollen levels in the city’s streets.
A team of workers from Inagra is using a special washing and sweeping machine to remove ornamental banana tree pollen, particularly high levels of which have been detected in the city recently, along with chinaberry tree seeds.
The method, the environmental councillor explained, is far more effective than traditional leaf blowers as the latter spread pollen rather than trapping it.
The banana tree has a very short, but very intense, pollination period and extremely high pollen levels are generally reached in April, causing severe symptoms in allergy sufferers, especially on windy days.
A single tree is capable of producing up to 143 billion pollen grains.
Moreover, the team is also focusing on removing fallen seeds from chinaberry trees as quickly as possible to increase public safety. The trees produce large quantities of seeds that fall to the ground and, if not removed quickly, pose risks to young children and animals and also to the elderly, who are prone to slipping on them and falling over.
