Grocery prices continue to skyrocket across the Region of Murcia
Food, alcohol and transport costs all increased considerably in the Region in September
Inflation figures for the month of September have just been released and it’s fair to say they don’t make for pleasant reading. Prices in general continue to skyrocket but in the Region of Murcia, it’s mainly food and the transport sector that are causing the damage, hiking up the Consumer Price Index (CPI) by 3.9% compared to this time last year.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages grew by 10.6% compared to September 2022, a figure that exceeds the increase at the national level, which stands at 10.5%. In fact, overall, Murcia is the fourth region in Spain that has experienced the largest increase, after the Canary Islands, Cantabria and the Balearic Islands.
After food, alcoholic beverages (+8.6%), tobacco, leisure and culture (+5.1%), hotels and restaurants (+6.5%), communications (+4.3%) and transportation (+3.8%) are the sectors where the CPI has grown the most.
It’s clear though, when September’s figures are compared to August, that groceries and fuel are the main culprits.
On the other hand, the housing sector is the one area that has actually dropped in price compared to last year thanks to a steady decline in the cost of electricity. Clothing and footwear have also become slightly less expensive.
As a whole, the CPI increased by 0.2% in September in relation to the previous month and raised its interannual rate up to 3.5%.
