ARCHIVED - Guardia Civil in Spain get the green light for tattoos
Inked-up officers in Spain can keep their tattoos as long as they respect constitutional values
The Ministry of the Interior has announced a reversal of the decision to ban Guardia Civil officers from having visible tattoos amid severe criticism. The prohibition was supported by the Council of State, who considered it “prudent” to give the officers a period of one year to remove any head, neck or hand ink.
The decision to withdraw the ban was made by Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and the new Royal Decree regulating the general use of the official uniform authorises tattoos providing they don’t contain any expressions contrary to constitutional values that would damage the image of the Armed Institute.
This rule does not only apply to current Guardia Civil officers; also included are new recruits, retired agents, students and people outside the force who have been exceptionally authorised to wear the uniform.
The Royal Decree does prohibit all rings, spikes and inserts “other than those intended for the use of earrings that are visible when wearing the uniform.” This applies to both male and female personnel. It is also expressly stated that officers are not permitted to wear the uniform on social media or for any kind of advertising purposes.
Likewise, members of the public not working with the force are prohibited from wearing or using, in any circumstance, a Guardia Civil uniform or part of a uniform, as well as their official insignia, emblems or decorations, or any other accessories that may generate deception.
