Guide to Tempranillo wines in Spain
Learn more about Spanish Tempranillo wines and where you can buy them
Almost every region of Spain makes its own wines and has its own grapes, and some of them are more famous than others. You’ve probably heard of Ribera and Rioja wines, which refer to a particular place in Spain where they’re made.
But just as important are Tempranillo wines, which don’t come from one specific place but rather are made with the unique Tempranillo variety of grape.
While there are other types of grapes used to make Spanish wines, Tempranillo is the most popular Spanish red wine varietal by far. Tempranillo grapes are used to make famous wines such as Rioja, Rioja Gran Reserva and Ribera del Duero wines, which have become almost synonymous with Spanish red wine.
Examples of other Spanish red wine grapes Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell (Mourvedre), Cariñena (Carignan), Bobal, Mencia and Manto Negro.
Spanish wines made from Tempranillo grapes often give a full-bodied flavour, which makes it perfect for the production of La Rioja and Ribera wines.
Part of the reason the Tempranillo is so popular and so widely grown is the fact that it ripens several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. The clue is actually in the name – ‘Tempranillo’ is a diminutive of the word ‘temprano’ in Spanish, meaning ‘early’.
