A team of archaeologists will lead the tours of the iconic Murcia landmark
As works continue to restore Cartagena’s iconic Roman Amphitheatre, the local authorities have announced that the historical site will open its doors during the weekends of November and December for guided tours under its new campaign, ‘Open for construction work’."After finishing the works of the second phase of recovery of the Roman Amphitheatre, we reopen its doors so that the public can know this unique site”, according to the deputy mayor and councillor for Archaeological Heritage, Ana Belén Castejón.Operating on November 20 and 27 as well as December 4, 11 and 18, the site will host two guided tours per day in groups of 20 people. The visits will take place at 10am and 11.30am, with mandatory use of a mask throughout the route, and will allow a total of 200 people to visit the amphitheatre.“The visits will be guided by the team of archaeologists from the Archaeological Excavation of the Amphitheatre. In addition to touring part of the major and minor axis of the Amphitheatre, with the adjoining rooms, from below, we will be able to contemplate the consolidated barrage of the Plaza de Toros, whose works have just finished”, explained Ms Castejón.Reservations for the tours can be made on the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena website and must be booked in advance.Image: Ayuntamiento Cartagena
