Half the country on alert for snow and rain: Spain weather forecast Oct 17-20
After a stormy start in most of Spain, the weather should settle down over the weekend
Weather alerts on Thursday October 17
Spain is in for a complicated few days weather-wise with several different factors at play. A low-pressure trough near the western part of the country and the passage of an active tropical wave nearby, along with the remnants of Hurricane Leslie will all combine to create a wet, windy weekend, and even snow in some areas.
Once the Atlantic front reaches mainland Spain on Thursday, it will likely end up isolated and form what’s known as a DANA or cold drop. The impact on the country will be fleeting enough, but it does mean that the temperatures will drop suddenly and torrential downpours, along with muddy rain, will follow.
However, while the storm patterns are still very uncertain, it looks as though the weather will clear up before the end of the weekend and the temperatures will climb once more.
Thursday October 17
Half of the country has been placed on alert for driving rain, stormy intervals and rough seas on Thursday, including Andalucía, the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia. The worst of the weather will hit in the morning, and it will start to dry up towards the evening.
Temperatures will plummet in most parts, resulting in a strong chance of snow above around 1,800 metres. Nevertheless, the mercury will still reach 27ºC or 28ºC in the likes of Alicante and Murcia.
Friday October 18
Unstable conditions will persist in the north and east of the country, with overcast skies and rain accompanied by storms forecast in Catalonia and the Valencian Community. There’s not much chance of the rain extending any further south though and for the most part the rest of Spain should be cloudy but dry.
Few changes are expected temperature-wise.
Saturday October 19
While the interaction of the different fronts is still a little uncertain, it looks as though the weather should begin to settle down on Saturday. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), any rain should be confined to the extreme north, with none forecast in Andalucía, Murcia or the Mediterranean coast.
In addition, the daytime temperatures should begin to climb again.
Sunday October 20
Stable weather is expected to continue in most of the country and the Balearic Islands on Sunday, although with abundant cloudiness in the early hours in large areas, which will generally tend to lift throughout the day.
Night-time temperatures will remain largely unchanged but the mercury should continue to rise during the day, hovering around the mid-20s in most parts.
