Hand luggage allowances on flights in Spain for 2023
Airlines like Ryanair, Iberia and Air Europa all have different baggage rules in Spain
Many travellers taking a quick trip back to the UK or jetting off on a weekend break in Spain choose to only carry hand luggage due to the hassle and expense of checking in a suitcase. But the days of cramming several bags under your seat and into the overhead bins are over, and not knowing the cabin baggage regulations of your airline can be a costly mistake.
Several of the most popular carriers have already warned that the price of tickets will be going up this year and there have been some changes in hand luggage allowances, too. To make sure your next holiday is plane sailing, we have all the details of cabin baggage rules – and the penalties for breaking them – for the main airlines operating in Spain.
Ryanair
Undoubtedly one of the most controversial airlines when it comes to baggage, Ryanair’s ground staff are notoriously strict, particularly at the Spanish airports. Passengers are allowed to bring a small bag on board for free, but measuring 40 x 20 x 25 centimetres, this is little bigger than a large handbag or compact backpack.
To go up in size, customers can purchase priority boarding which will allow them to carry the small bag in addition to a suitcase measuring 55 x 40 x 20 and weighing a maximum of 10kg.
If you exceed the limit on the free bag you’ll be forced to pay 45.99 euros at the boarding gate and if your hand luggage is too big or too heavy, you’ll be charged 69.99 euros to have it put in the hold.
Iberia
Iberia is one of the few airlines that allows you to carry up to two pieces of hand luggage in the cabin for free.
Passengers can bring on board one small bag measuring 40 x 30 x 15 centimetres as well as a suitcase measuring 56 x 40 x 25 and not exceeding 10kg.
Get it wrong though and you’ll be asked to check in your luggage at a cost of 60 euros.
Air Europa
At Air Europa, the measurements of the free small piece are 20 x 35 x 30 centimetres and those of cabin suitcases are 55 x 35 x 25 centimetres with a max weight of 10kg.
If this is exceeded, the baggage will be put in the hold with a possible additional charge.
Vueling
This low-cost airline also offers a free piece of luggage measuring 40 x 20 x 30 centimetres but if your bag exceeds this you’ll have to pay 30 euros at check-in or 40 euros at the gate.
Passengers do have the option to pay for a larger cabin bag (55 x 40 x 20 centimetres and 10kg max weight), but excess baggage here will cost 70 euros at the check-in counter or 80 euros at the boarding gate.
