ARCHIVED - Hashish worth 40 million euros seized in Granada
National Police in Andalucía intercepted the 26 tons of narcotics in the town of Atarfe
Operation Alatriste has resulted in several arrests along with the seizure of 26 tons of hashish in the small Granada town of Atarfe. Carrying a load worth an estimate 40 million euros, the criminal gang led Spanish police on a cross-country chase before trying to ram their vehicles off the road in an attempt to escape capture.
At the beginning of September, French authorities alerted Spain of a possible drug shipment arriving from the Moroccan port of Tangier-Med, and the Spanish National Police mounted an operation to maintain constant surveillance on the vehicle. The drugs arrived into the port of Algeciras and, in the nearby province of Cádiz, the truck was joined by additional gang members as well as a look-out car which travelled ahead of the cargo.
The caravan of criminals didn’t stop again for another 250 kilometres, until they reached a rest stop in the town of Atarfe, at which point they somehow became aware of the police presence following them. The officers were suddenly surrounded by several of the gang vehicles which tried to block their pursuit and another police car was almost rammed off the road.
In the end though, the Spanish police caught up with the criminals and made four arrests. Two other members of the gang were apprehended in France. The huge hashish seizure reportedly had a street value of more than 1,600 euros per kilo.
In 2019, the last year for which full data on drug trafficking in Spain is available, a total of 349 tons of hashish was seized by the authorities.
