Headless body of toddler found on Spanish beach
The gruesome discovery was made in the province of Tarragona, northern Spain
A major investigation has been opened after a council worker discovered the headless body of a young child on a beach in the Costa Dorada on Tuesday July 11. The decapitated baby, thought to be aged between two and three years old, was found in the Roda de Berà resort in the northeastern province of Tarragona.
Local mayor Pere Virgili said that early indications are that the child could be a casualty of a migrant boat which sank off the coast of Spain.
Roda de Berà Town Hall said in a tweet this morning: “We inform you that this morning the body of a two to three-year-old child was found on the shoreline on the Costa Dorada beach.
“The area is cordoned off and officials are waiting for the judge to authorise the removal of the body. We ask the public to avoid the area.”
Mr Virgili explained that the council cleaner who made the grim discovery found the body lying in the sand and at first thought it was a doll. In fact, the authorities believe that several earlier beachgoers may have ignored the corpse having made the same assumption.
When the worker realised it was a child, he phoned his bosses who contacted the local police.
“He is not wearing the proper clothing for being on the beach,” Mr Virgili explained, adding that the toddler was dressed in “a bodysuit, a kind of tracksuit and a jacket.”
The child’s remains were removed from the beach at around 11.30am and a postmortem will be carried out later today to determine the cause of death.
“All we can confirm at the moment is that the body of a baby has been found at Roda de Berà beach in the province of Tarragona,” a Guardia Civil spokesperson said.
“The alarm was raised at 8.50am this morning. The matter is still under investigation.”
