ARCHIVED - Health Alert: Spain recalls common stomach medication
Omeprazol is one of the most widely used medications in Spain for heartburn and reflux

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps) has issued a recall of Omeprazol, a very common medication used to treat a variety of stomach complaints. The drug has been withdrawn from pharmacies due to the detection of “unknown impurities” in a batch.
The affected medication is Omeprazol Altan 40g which comes in packs of 50 (NR: 66870 and CN: 600258). The batch number is 22CO169 with an expiry date of March 31, 2023.
The drug is manufactured and marketed by Altan Pharmaceuticals SA.
Aemps has ordered the immediate withdrawal from the market of all of the affected batches, as well as their return “through the usual channels”. According to the agency, this medication is primarily used in hospitals and health centres throughout Spain, and therefore the regional authorities will be responsible for managing its recall.
Omeprazol is one of the most widely used drugs in Spain to combat stomach ailments and is commonly used to treat heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux. It can also be given to patients suffering from indigestion and peptic ulcers.
