Health alert: Spain withdraws moisturiser containing carcinogenic ingredients
The body and hand cream, widely available in Spain, can also lead to skin irritation and fertility issues
The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has announced the immediate withdrawal of ‘Nuky Soft’ moisturising lotion from stores across Spain. The Ministry of Health has also issued an alert to halt the marketing of several lots and to advise consumers who have the product at home not to use it.
The recall is due to the presence of butylphenyl methylpropional, also known as lilial, a substance prohibited in cosmetic products. The affected lots include 211125, 211001, and 210726. The company responsible for marketing these lots is Arom SA.
What is the danger?
According to the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), lilial, is a member of the aromatic aldehyde family. This substance is commonly used in cosmetics to give them a floral scent. However, the OCU states that this ingredient is believed to cause problems with fertility and skin sensitivity.
As of March 2022, the European Union has banned the use of lilial in cosmetics due to its potential health risks. Moreover, studies have shown that exposure to lilial can have even more harmful effects on the body, as the compound has a carcinogenic and mutagenic effect.
Therefore, AEMPS has issued an alert to prevent its use in order to minimise potential health problems.
Advice if you have this moisturiser at home
When confronted with a health warning regarding a particular type of cosmetic, the best advice from medical professionals is to remain calm and take the necessary precautions.
Firstly, check if you have the product in question at home or if any other products contain the specified ingredient. Keep in mind that labels like ‘dermatologically tested,’ ‘hypoallergenic,’ or ‘suitable for sensitive skin’ don't necessarily guarantee the absence of potentially allergic fragrances in cosmetics.
If you've already used the product, thoroughly wash the affected area and consult a professional if you notice any unusual skin symptoms. If you merely have it in your toiletry bag, it's best not to continue using it.
