Heat eases off a fraction: Spain weather forecast Aug 1-4
While the temperatures will drop slightly, several parts of Spain remain on alert for extreme heat
Weather alerts on Thursday August 1
August has arrived and while it’s typically one of the hottest months, it’s beginning with a little respite from the suffocating temperatures of late. The summer heatwaves have hit in rapid succession and the latest blast created several records. In fact, the hottest day of all time globally, according to NASA, was July 22.
Over the next day or so, the mercury will take a little dip, but the temperatures will still be scorching in most of Spain. The southern regions are, as usual, bearing the brunt, with the Valencian Community expected to record highs of 34ºC and large parts of Andalucía, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia and the Region of Murcia facing a severe risk.
It will be dry, bright and sunny in most of Spain on Thursday August 1 with the usual exception of Galicia and Cantabria, where scattered showers are forecast during the afternoon.
‘Calima’ dust carried from the Saharan desert will mostly impact the Canary Islands, but could also affect southern Spain and the Balearics.
Daytime temperatures will drop in the far north and central Spain but they’ll continue to swing upwards in most of the south, hovering between 36 and 40ºC for the most part.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated orange heat warnings in Andalucía, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Yellow alerts are active in Castilla y León, Extremadura and Madrid.
We can look forward to an almost general drop in temperature on Friday August 2, although the mercury will remain very high in areas of Andalucía, southeast areas of inland Spain and in Catalonia.
Storms are a possibility in the Cantabrian area but the skies should be mostly clear everywhere else.
Aemet has activated orange heat warnings in Andalucía.
Yellow alerts are active in Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Murcia and the Valencian Community.
All of the heat warnings have been downgraded to yellow on Saturday August 3 and there will be a noticeable drop in the Mediterranean. However, the nights will continue to be rather uncomfortable, with the thermometers failing to dip below 25ºC.
Yellow alerts are active in Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Madrid.
Sunday August 4 will bring even more relief as the temperatures continue to fall across the board.
But even so, the mercury will exceed 36ºC on the southern Atlantic slope, in the depressions of the north-east of Spain and in the centre of the northern plateau, with temperatures reaching 40ºC in areas of the valleys of the Tajo, Guadiana and Guadalquivir.
