ARCHIVED - Heatwave set to continue all week: Spain weather outlook July 11-14
Thirteen regions in Spain are on alert for extreme temperature at the beginning of the week
When the exceptionally early heatwave struck Spain in mid-June, meteorologists predicted that this summer would be warmer than normal and so far, the weather is living up to expectations. July has been mixed, with mild temperatures and even some torrential storms in recent days but the second heatwave of the year has dug its heels in and Aemet predicts little change in the thermometers until Friday July 15 “at least.”
The weekend was a true scorcher, with the mercury barely dipping below 35ºC in most areas; the temperatures will drop ever so slightly on Monday July 11, before rising again for the rest of the week.
Even with this decrease on Monday, still no fewer than thirteen regions are on alert for extreme temperatures, including Andalucía, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. The mercury in the Region of Murcia has remained virtually unchanged for several days, hovering around the 35ºC mark, and in southern and central Spain the uncomfortable tropical nights look set to continue all week.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday:
Alicante: 23ºC minimum; 32ºC maximum
Almería: 24ºC min; 37ºC max
Málaga: 22ºC min; 30ºC max
Murcia: 22ºC min; 35ºC max
The warm weather continues into Tuesday July 12, where several communities have once more been issued with yellow and orange weather alerts for heat. The day will be slightly cloudy or clear in most of the country, with the thermometers expected to exceed 35ºC inland, topping out at a sweltering 40ºC in the southwest.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Tuesday:
Alicante: 24ºC minimum; 32ºC maximum
Almería: 24ºC min; 36ºC max
Málaga: 22ºC min; 32ºC max
Murcia: 22ºC min; 35ºC max
Aemet predicts that the temperatures will continue to climb on Wednesday July 13 as a result of the arrival of an African air mass, driven to mainland Spain by an area of low pressure located in the west of the Atlantic. If this comes to pass, temperatures will easily reach 38ºC in most of the country, exceeding 40ºC in many areas.
The nights will become more unpleasant, the thermometers refusing to dip below 25ºC in parts of central Andalucía and Extremadura.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday:
Alicante: 23ºC minimum; 33ºC maximum
Almería: 24ºC min; 33ºC max
Málaga: 23ºC min; 31ºC max
Murcia: 22ºC min; 39ºC max
The situation will change a little on Thursday July 14, when intervals of cloudiness are forecast in the northwest of the country, with scattered clouds expected throughout Spain. Some showers and storms could occur in Galicia and Cantabria, but the dry and sunny weather will persist in the south.
Suspended dust is likely in the west while the day-time temperatures should decrease slightly along the eastern coast, the Balearic Islands and in western Andalucía.
The mercury will exceed 40ºC in much of the southwest, mainly in the valleys of large rivers, and will remain above 36-38ºC in much of the interior of the peninsula and in Mallorca.
