Heatwave set to continue until mid-week: Spain weather forecast Aug 21-24
Most of Spain is on low or medium risk alert for extreme temperatures in the coming days
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has confirmed that Spain is in the midst of its fourth summer heatwave, which officially began on Sunday August 20 with temperatures of 40ºC registered in parts of western Andalucia. This episode will likely last until Thursday August 24, but the hottest days by far across the board will be Monday and Tuesday.
Daytime temperatures will progressively rise in much of the country over the coming days, according to Aemet, but the nights will also be extremely warm during this August heatwave, with the mercury failing to dip below 23-25ºC in large parts of southern Spain.
Monday August 21 will see a cloudy start in the Mediterranean area but this will clear quickly, giving rise to a sunny day in most of Spain, with the exception of Cantabria where the overcast skies could lead to some light rain.
The daytime temperatures will actually fall in the southeast of the country compared to Sunday, albeit only very slightly, but the mercury will remain much the same in the rest of the country.
Orange weather alert for high temperatures: Andalucia, Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Navarra, La Rioja.
Yellow weather alert for high temperatures: Balearic Islands, Galicia, Basque Country, Valencian Community.
Cloudy intervals will mark Tuesday August 22 in Galicia and Cantabria but early overcast skies in the Mediterranean will again clear quickly and the day will be bright and sunny across Spain. However, this cloud cover could deepen late in the afternoon in inland northern areas, resulting in isolated showers and storms.
The daytime temperatures will rise most noticeably in northwestern Spain and Tuesday night will be considerably warmer along the entire west coast.

Yellow weather alert for high temperatures: Balearic Islands, Basque Country, Valencian Community.
Most of Spain will enjoy mostly clear or slightly cloudy skies on Wednesday August 23 but towards the afternoon abundant cloud will cover much of northern Spain where intermittent storms are likely.
The nighttime temperatures will also shoot up in the northwest without major changes in the rest of the country. On the other hand, the mercury is forecast to hit between 33 and 36ºC at the height of the day in all inland areas, while the southwest can expect the thermometers to climb to 40ºC

In a large part of the country, slightly cloudy or clear skies will predominate on Thursday August 24, however it will be largely overcast in the north of Galicia and the Cantabrian area due to the arrival of several Atlantic fronts. Thursday’s forecast is still rather uncertain as meteorologists wait to see how these weather fronts will evolve, but at the moment it looks like scattered and sometimes heavy showers will hit northern Spain, which could be accompanied by hailstorms.
The nighttime time temperatures will take a much-needed dip in the west and during the day, the mercury should begin to fall in much of Andalucia and the southeast of the country. On the other hand, the thermometers will hover around the mid to high-30s inland and top out at 40ºC in the southwest.
For the time being, no weather alerts have been issued for Thursday.
