A wildfire broke out today, Thursday June 6, in the central Murcia municipality of Ricote. Four separate hotspots were located in the Ricote-Ojós area, and emergency fire crews have been working to put them all out.
The Region of Murcia’s Emergency Plan has been activated at level 1 due to the extent of the flames, which have spread rapidly due to the wind.

Emergency services received more than 40 phone calls to the emergency phone number 112, starting at around 4.51pm this Thursday, to alert them to the fire in the area and how rapidly it was spreading.
Six forestry brigades were sent to the scene, along with an environmental agent who, in turn, requested additional resources to help put the fire out.

Five fire engines and four helicopters from the Directorate General of Public Safety and Emergencies were needed to combat the flames.
At 6.18pm, level 1 of the Infomur Plan was activated. This, explained the 112 Emergency services, means that the fire by its “foreseeable evolution may seriously affect forest assets and, where applicable, slightly affect the population and non-forest assets”.

They considered that this fire “can be controlled with the means and resources of the Infomur Plan or with the incorporation of extraordinary means”.
The cause of the fire is not currently known, and fire crews continue working into the night to try to extinguish the flames completely.
