ARCHIVED - Hospital admissions and incidence rate drop: Murcia Covid update May 20
Daily infections have also reduced significantly in the Murcia Region this week

It’s been a week of positive news across Spain and in the Murcia Region: given the promising coronavirus data and the high level of vaccinations, the government has decided to remove all Covid checks at the French border, and the Minister of Tourism has indicated that unvaccinated non-EU tourists will be allowed to travel to Spain with only a negative test in the coming days.
In Murcia, the entire pandemic has highlighted how out-of-date and slow the Region’s medical reporting system is, with delays of two weeks in sending data to the Ministry of Health not uncommon at the height of the health crisis.
It’s hoped that these problems won’t be an issue for too much longer, however, as in the last few days both hospitalisations and the incidence rate in the Murcia Region have declined.
Coronavirus infections
The regional health authorities registered 493 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday May 18, which is a good decrease on the 714 infections detailed in the last update.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 424,264.
Cumulative incidence rate
The all-important 14-day cumulative incidence rate has also taken a nosedive, dropping from 1,449.16 cases per 100,000 inhabitants last Monday to 1,372. Moreover, the 7-day figure has also fallen to 582 cases, which indicates that the data will continue to improve in the coming days.
Hospitalisations and Fatalities
There are currently 291 people hospitalised for Covid in Murcia (down from 312 on May 16), of which 15 patients are being treated for more serious conditions in the Region’s ICUs (an increase of 2).
One additional Covid-related fatality has been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 2,286.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, 91.90% of the entire population of the Murcia Region has had a least one dose. In addition, 84.59% of people are now double jabbed.
