ARCHIVED - Hotels packed solid in the Region of Murcia this Easter
Tourist accommodation in parts of the Murcia Region exceeded pre-pandemic levels this Semana Santa
“If Easter is good, the summer will be better,” president of Hosteaguilas, Alfonso Soler, expressed before a bumper Holy Week, which has exceeded all expectations in the Region of Murcia.
Those in the know were already expecting great things for the first Semana Santa celebrations without any restrictions since the outbreak of Covid, but several municipalities have welcomed more tourists than even the most optimistic forecasters dared to hope for.
In the popular resort of Cartagena, 92% of all hotel rooms were occupied over the Easter weekend, with many establishments totally booked out along the coast. And those who travelled to the Region took advantage of the many cultural activities on offer, with the city’s museums and visitor centres easily exceeding 2019 levels by an impressive 8% during the 10 days of the break.
Almost 25,000 visitors passed through the doors of Cartagena’s museums during Holy Week, the vast majority of whom were from other parts of Spain. Tourists from abroad made up 32% of the total.
“Not only has the number of visitors recovered from before the pandemic, considered the year with the most tourism visits in Cartagena, but it has also been widely exceeded. Holy Week has been a great tourist attraction, added to our offer of sun and beaches,” celebrated the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo.
In nearby Águilas, Semana Santa has also been good for business and while the numbers didn’t climb quite as high as in 2019, hotels still reported an 85% occupancy rate. This result is a very positive indication that the summer season will bring more tourists to the area than ever before, according to Mr Soler.
What’s more, the local experts believe that coronavirus restrictions introduced a new local destination to travellers who had not visited the municipality before.
“It is a safe destination, economically quite affordable and a place that can be enjoyed a lot. Many people who visited Águilas for the first time keep coming back,” the president of Hosteaguilas added.
