ARCHIVED - House of the Dragon: Spain prepares for surge of fantasy fan visitors
The latest Game of Thrones series has been filmed extensively in Spain

The long-anticipated fantasy epic House of the Dragon made its TV debut this week and tourist bosses in Spain are anticipating a huge surge of visitors eager to experience the rugged landscape and breathtaking scenery where the Game of Thrones prequel was filmed.
The new series, which is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire and Earth, aired on August 22 and is set around 200 years before the original show. It examines the power struggle between different members of the Targaryen family and in particular, the fierce desire of Daenerys to take her place on the Iron Throne.
Its predecessor Game of Thrones transformed the tourism industry of Croatia, Iceland and Northern Ireland after filming began in 2011 and now it is the turn of Spain, where fans of the show can actually stay a stone’s throw from the sets.
Avid viewers will be excited to know that the infamous King’s Landing was shot in Spain’s Cáceres and Trujillo, while in this instalment, the free city of Pentos was filmed in the Granada town of La Calahorra.
For those really wanting to soak up the atmosphere, the Rusticae rural accommodation website offers no fewer than 10 on-site options where visitors can stay the night and completely immerse themselves in the experience.
The Rusticae El Patio Plaza Mayor Trujillo apartments, located in the emblematic Plaza Mayor of Trujillo and the scene of countless tourist, are topped with 12 balconies offering unbeatable views of the castle where first Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon were filmed.
Another Spanish location chosen by the directors is La Calahorra whose castle will be the main icon of the free city of Pentos this time.
