In the Spanish capital, Madrid, three days of mourning have been announced, from Thursday to Sunday, while the Real Casa de Correos, the seat of the regional government in Madrid, will be lit up in the colours of the Union Jack. The region of Andalucía has also announced a day of mourning.
Spain’s Royal Family, Their Majesties King Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia sent a “telegram of condolences” in English to the newly ascended King Charles III:
“Your Majesty, dearest Charles,
“Deeply saddened by the sorrowful news of the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, your beloved Mother, I would like to offer Your Majesty and the British people, on my behalf and on behalf of the Spanish Government and people, our most heartfelt condolences.
“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth has undoubtedly witnessed, written and shaped many of the most relevant chapters in the history of our world during the last seven decades.
“Her sense of duty, commitment and a whole life devoted to serving the people of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland set an example for all of us and will remain as a solid and valuable legacy for future generations.
“Queen Letizia and I send Your Majesty and the whole Family our love and prayers. You are all in our hearts and thoughts. We will miss Her dearly.
Others in Spain also paid their respects to the deceased monarch, with President Pedro Sánchez sending his “condolences to the entire Royal Family, the government and the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.”
He went on to call her “A figure of global significance” and a “witness and author of British and European history”.

In Benidorm, where around 4,000 British residents are registered as living full-time and which is a popular holiday destination in Spain for Brits, the City Hall said they were “deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” and expressed tehir “deepest condolences to the British Royal Family and the People of the United Kingdom”.

In Malaga on the Costa del Sol, another hotspot for Brits in Spain, Mayor Francisco de la Torre took to Twitter to praise “Elizabeth II, one of the most important personalities in the history of the contemporary world, an example of service to her country”.

For their part, the British Embassy in Madrid limited themselves to sharing an official communiqué from the Royal Family on their Facebook page and updating their cover photo to a moving photo of the Queen.
They have also made condolence books available for the general public to sign at the Embassy and all its outposts, including Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Ibiza, Las Palmas, Malaga, Palma and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
