How to stop car thieves this summer: 4 essential tips from Spanish Police
With thefts on the rise in holiday hotspots, these simple precautions can help keep your vehicle safe at the beach and beyond
The Spanish summer is finally here in all its sweltering heat and whether you’re jetting to the Costas for a holiday or living here full time, chances are you’ll use a car at some point to get out and about. Of course, thieves also know this, which is why car thefts and break-ins skyrocket during high season.
To keep us all on our guard, the official Instagram profile of the Elche Police in Spain has published a video with a series of tips to prevent burglaries from vehicles.
Their focus is on the beach, as this tends to be one of the most vulnerable spots for drivers. For starters, coastal areas are usually packed, so robbers can easily blend in with the crowd while keeping a keen eye on you. Furthermore, beachgoers are often distracted between wrangling excited kids or hauling heavy deckchairs and coolers.
While most coastal resorts are closely monitored by police patrols during the summer months, the officers can’t be everywhere, so here are a few handy tips to keep in your back pocket, courtesy of the Elche Police.
First, any valuables should be kept clearly out of sight in the car and, if possible, brought with you when you head down to the sand.
"Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight. Try to carry them with you, and if not possible, store them in a hidden place before reaching the parking area."
On the other hand, it's also better not to leave anything in the boot and if you do, make sure no one sees you putting the object inside:
"If you're going to leave something in the trunk, look around first. Thieves can be on the lookout at all times, and you shouldn't get too confident."
Thirdly, it is very important, according to the police officer, to check all the doors and windows and make sure they are all "closed", otherwise you could get a scare: "Check that all the doors and windows are closed. Don't just press the lock button, which might not work if the thieves are using signal jammers."
Finally, you should also park in a busy area where your car is in plain sight.
"Do not park in isolated places. Our patrols monitor various parking spots along the coast. If you notice anything or observe someone acting suspiciously, call us at 092.”
