ARCHIVED - Hundreds of dead starlings fall from the sky in Galicia
The birds dropped mid-flight onto pedestrians and cars in Ferrol, Spain
Drivers and pedestrians in the town of Ferrol, Galicia, were astonished on Friday morning, November 19, as more than 200 dead and dying starlings rained from the sky on Calle Alcalde Quintanilla Martínez.
Amazingly, the Local Police confirmed that no accidents had occurred from the birds showering down on passing cars and the starlings were quickly removed from the road.
Environmental technicians travelled to the area and found five birds still alive but unable to fly. These were transferred to the Wild Fauna Recovery Centre in Olerios for examination. The Ferrol bird control company indicated that a small flock of starlings had been spotted close to the University the day before, but the street where this huge number of birds perished is not a known roosting site.
Preliminary investigations point to electrocution as a possible reason for their deaths. Fairly common in starlings, electrocution can occur in birds that fly close together. If one specimen touches a high voltage cable with its wing, the electricity can be rapidly transmitted to the other birds in the group, resulting in mass fatalities.
