Hurricane Kirk hits parts of Spain: Weather forecast Oct 7-10
With the exception of the southeast, most of Spain will be battered by heavy rain and gale-force winds this week
Weather alerts activated for Wednesday
After a very pleasant weekend with mild temperatures and hardly any rain, the situation will change drastically across Spain this week when several fronts will bring driving rain and strong winds to much of the country. We’ll also be at the mercy of Hurricane Kirk, which is slowly approaching Europe and seems to be entering the continent through the southeast of France, so its effects could also be felt in Spain.
Monday October 7
The rain will begin in earnest on Monday with the passage of a cold front that will cross the whole country. This will result in stormy conditions in western Galicia, Castilla y Leon, Castile-La Mancha and Andalucía, as well as in areas of Extremadura and the Pyrenees.
There’s also a chance of lighter showers in inland areas of the south, but the rain is unlikely to reach the southeast coast.
Daytime temperatures will drop across the board, but the mercury will remain in the high 20s or low 30s in large parts of the southern Mediterranean coast.
Orange alert for storms: Aragon.
Yellow alert for storms and/or gusts: Andalucía, Balearic Islands, Castilla y Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra.
Tuesday October 8
Spain will start to feel the impact of the hurricane on Tuesday when one of its associated fronts leaves overcast skies and storms in the northwest of the country, although this could be felt in a weaker way all along the Atlantic coast.
It will be rather cloudy as well in the east and southeast, but no rain is expected.
Temperatures will continue to fall in most places, most noticeably inland.
Yellow alert for storms and/or gusts: Andalucía, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Galicia, Basque Country.
Wednesday October 9
The path of the fronts is unpredictable on Wednesday but at the moment, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects the after-effects of Hurricane Kirk to linger over the northwest of Spain, spreading rain and overcast skies from west to east and reaching most of the country. The notable exception again will be the extreme southeast, where it should remain dry.
Daytime temperatures will start to climb.
Orange weather alerts for storms and/or gusts: Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Galicia, Navarra, Basque Country.
Yellow weather alerts for storms and/or gusts: Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Rioja.
Thursday October 10
The worst of the weather fronts should have passed by Thursday but the weather will still be unstable in the north, with cloudy skies and widespread rain. In Mediterranean areas, no precipitation is expected with slightly cloudy skies.
However, it’s not ruled out that at the end of the day a new low pressure system will approach the southwest of the country, which could leave more widespread rain.
Temperatures will tend to fall across the board, except for some minor increases in the southwest.
