ARCHIVED - Hurricanes and DANAs on the horizon: Spain weather outlook September 23-25
Temperatures will plummet all across Spain this weekend with heavy rain and widespread storms forecast

This weekend is going to be marked by instability in practically the entire country as an intense DANA storm, carrying a fresh northerly wind, will sweep in across the Mediterranean coast, bringing heavy rain mainly to the north, east and the Balearics.
In terms of rainfall on mainland Spain, the worst is expected in the eastern part of the country in the coming days, with more than 50 or 60 millimetres predicted for Catalonia, southern Aragón and the interior of the Valencian Community.
The temperatures will experience a general drop, cooler than usual for this time of year, particularly in northern Spain.
Friday September 23 marks the turning point, beginning with locally strong rain in areas of the Mediterranean. The skies will be cloudy and showers will dominate in most of the country, gaining momentum in the east as the evening draws in.
With the exception of higher values in the Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys, in most of Spain the thermometers will be above 25 or 30ºC.
On Saturday September 24 "a trough to the north of the peninsula" looks likely to arrive and the latest information shows that it could affect almost the entire country. "The rains will affect the northern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, although they could spread weaker to the central area, such as the Community of Madrid or points in Castilla-La Mancha," the experts at Eltiempo explain.
The mercury will drop rather dramatically on Saturday, plummeting up to 10ºC in the north.
By far the most unstable weather will arrive on Sunday September 25, although the rain will ease up a bit in the southwest, instead moving towards the east, bringing torrential downpours to the Mediterranean coast.
If this is the case, the worst episodes will be seen along the coast of Valencia, in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
“The rains could be torrential with a Mediterranean Sea that still has very high surface temperatures,” the meteorologist added.
Temperatures will drop in the east and south of the peninsula, with most areas not exceeding 25ºC.
The real concern for the coming weekend is in the Canary Islands, where the tail end of Fiona, a significant category 4 hurricane, has been given a 20% chance of hitting.
