Hybrid vehicle sales already more than double those of diesel cars in the Region of Murcia

Following a devastating couple of years at the hands of the pandemic, motor dealers in the Murcia Region have had an encouraging start to the year as overall sales in February increased by 17% compared to the same period in 2021. The figures are still a long way off pre-pandemic 2019, however, which saw 40% more sales than this year, but the industry is certainly driving in the right direction.

A major contributor to the recovery of the sector has been an unprecedented demand for more environmentally-friendly vehicles – fully electric cars, hybrids and hydrogen and gas-run models – sales of which shot up by 50% last month.

Petrol cars are still leading the market, with sales increasing by 27.36%, but diesel has taken a major hit: registrations in February fell by 34.84% compared to the same month last year and incredibly, hybrid vehicles outsold diesel ones by more than 50% in Murcia.

According to the associations of manufacturers (Anfac), dealers (Faconauto) and sellers (Ganvam), although the registration of passenger cars and SUVs increased by 6.57% in February, the recovery of the sector is still quite “weak”, a situation which could be exacerbated by the escalating crisis between Ukraine and Russia.

It’s widely acknowledged that a global lack of semiconductors continues to be one of the main causes of low sales volumes, an issue which is now further aggravated by international supply uncertainties, which is lengthening the market stagnation.
