ARCHIVED - ICU admissions drop by 4 per cent: Spain Covid update Jan 16
Covid incidence in Spain has also remained at its pre-Christmas levels despite a busy holiday season
While the World Health Organisation is still on high-alert over the Kraken variant and is closely monitoring its prevalence in Spain and other nations, the impact so far has been minimal. In fact, many of the coronavirus datapoints in Spain have dropped again this week and the cumulative incidence rate in those over 60 has returned to its pre-Christmas level, despite the fact that social interactions were obviously more frequent over the festive period.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered an additional 17,773 cases of coronavirus on Friday, compared to 9,220 on the same day the previous week.
Of the total infections, 10,900 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60, which is a considerable increase on the 6,671 registered last Friday.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,711,251.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate has registered another slight 5 point decrease, falling to 124.52 cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 129.40. In addition, the 7-day figure, standing at 52.65, still remains more than 50% below the two-week rate, an excellent indication that the health situation remains relatively stable.
In the past two weeks, a total of 15,339 positives have been registered in the over 60s age group.
When it comes to the different autonomous communities, Andalucia has regained the best spot and now has the lowest incidence rate in country, with 64.83 cases per 100,000.
Melilla is currently faring the worst, with 57.47 infections per 100,000 people while the Valencian Community is sticking below the national average, with 117.49 cases.
The highest incidence continues to be recorded in people over the age of 80, with a rate of 223.00 cases this week, followed by those aged between 70 and 79 (125.81) and between 60 and 69 (83.16).
Fatalities and hospitalisations
A further 104 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last 7 days, bringing the total number of deaths in Spain up to 117,759.
The number of people hospitalised in the ICU due to Covid in Spain has decreased by 3.8% over the last week and only Aragon, the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community and the Basque Country registered increases in these numbers. General hospital bed occupation has also stabilised, with 15 fewer people admitted.
There are currently 3,505 patients admitted to hospitals across Spain with Covid, compared to 3,520 last Thursday. At the moment, 222 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the ICU, which is a reduction of 9.
These figures mean that 2.52% of all intensive care beds are occupied by people with a positive diagnosis.
Vaccination data
As of January 16, 92.9% of the population (39,204,019 people) are double jabbed. In addition, 39,280,943 people over the age of 12, or 93.1% of the population, have received at least one dose.
