Iglesia de los Santos Mártires Abdón y Senén, Calasparra

The church of the Holy Martyrs Iglesia de los Santos Mártires

Iglesia de los Santos Mártires Abdón y Senén, CalasparraThis church was founded between 1584 and 1589 by Pedro Fernández Orozco and his wife, who also founded the chapel of San Miguel, and appears several times in documentation as a gateway to the town.

The original images of the saints were donated by a widow from Mula, Doña Juana Sánchez, the same benefactor who donated the figure of the Virgen de la Esperanza to the Sanctuary of La Esperanza in 1617. These, however, were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the two figures of the saints on show today were made in 1942 by the Valencia sculptor José López Díez. They were restored in 2012 by Pablo Nieto Vídal.

The church was restored twice, once after many of its works of art were destroyed during the Peninsular War, when Calasparra was sacked by the French on their way to try and take Portugal, then again after the Civil War.

Iglesia de los Santos Mártires Abdón y Senén, CalasparraThe church was fully restored in 2006.

Mass is held on Sunday mornings at 8.00.

The Iglesia de los Santos Mártires is located in Calle de los Santos, Calasparra
