Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, La Puebla
The church of La Puebla maintains the original façade
The main parish church of La Puebla is the most important currently used religious building in the Lentiscar area of the municipality of Cartagena, but it has had a relatively short history.
Despite its classical appearance and design it dates from as late as the 1950s, when its construction was due largely to the efforts of Juan Iniesta, who was parish priest of La Palma. The façade has been preserved from the previous small church in La Puebla, but the tower is a far more recent addition.
The building officially became the parish church in 1965 and is dedicated to the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, but there has also always been a particular sense of devotion among the local congregation to the image of Santa María del Buen Aire which is housed inside. This image was donated to the church from an old flour mill by General Perón, and the Romería of Santa María del Buen Aire is still celebrated in the town on 8th and 9th June every year.
Mass is held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 19.00, and on Sundays and religious holidays at 12.00.
